June Is National Safety Month

Each year, millions of Americans are injured and killed in severe accidents that could have been prevented with a little care and forethought. In fact, unintentional injuries are the leading cause of death for Americans under the age of 40. To counter this tragic statistic, the National Safety Council (NSC) established National Safety Month in 1996. Now, every June, the organization runs campaigns to notify people about critical safety practices that can prevent life-changing accidents at work, home, and even on the road. 

The National Safety Council is highlighting 4 safety topics in 2019:

Hazard Recognition

Hazard recognition is the ability to predict and/or notice hazardous issues or situations involving machines, the environment, other people, etc. In other words, we need to pay attention to the world around us, especially if we’re walking outside or operating a vehicle. “Hazardous issues” can range from clutter on the highway to downed power line; the potential for danger and consequential injuries is truly limitless.  By paying attention, you can avoid the hazard and also protect others by notifying a party (police, homeowner, electric company, etc.) who can resolve the issue.

Slips, Trips and Falls

According to the CDC, unintentional falls are the number on cause of nonfatal injuries in the United States. Their studies have proven that 1 out of 5 falls results in broken bones, hip fractures, and severe head injuries. A great way to avoid a bad fall is to keep your head up while walking and avoid checking your cell phone until you’re situated in a safe place. You can also keep walkways at work and home clear of debris, cords, and other potentially dangerous items.

Fatigue

The average adult requires 7-9 hours of sleep every night. However, most people only catch about 5-6 hours of sleep if they’re lucky. Late stage capitalism has created a working environment that pressures employees to work swing shifts, all-nighters, and overtime hours. Some Americans even work 2-3 jobs just to make ends meet. But people who don’t get enough sleep struggle at work and in their personal lives. A National Health Interview Survey reports that 30% of Americans are getting less than 6 hours of sleep each night. Chronic sleep deprivation can lead to depression, obesity, heart disease, and other illnesses. It’s also a leading cause of work accidents and traffic collisions. So, you may need to rework your schedule, but try to get 7-9 hours of sleep and see how your mood and productivity improve!

Impairment

Most people think of drinking and driving when they hear the word “impairment.” Granted, that is a very serious concern, particularly in Georgia, where intoxicated driving is one of the leading causes of traffic fatalities each year. But you don’t have to be drunk or driving to be intoxicated and in a dangerous situation.  Intoxication also applies to prescribed medications, vaporizers, and even cough syrup. If you go about your day in a haze, you can easily be involved in a serious accident. For example, you don’t want to operate machinery at work if your medication makes you groggy. Safety should always come first, so don’t imbibe unless you’re in a safe place and in control of the situation.
