Suffering the unexpected loss of a loved one is something no family should have to endure, and such an experience could affect the lives of surviving family members in Georgia and elsewhere in various ways. Such a loss may prove even more difficult to accept if it come as the result of another party’s negligence. A family in another state was recently awarded a judgment of over $18 million in a negligent security lawsuit after their son was killed in a shooting incident at a local convenience store.

The incident

The incident reportedly took place while an 18-year-old man was shopping at the store. Although few details were provided as what led to the incident, reports indicate that an altercation erupted in the store and that shots were fired. Although the man was not involved in the altercation, he was struck and killed by stray bullets.

The lawsuit states that evidence uncovered during a three-year investigation into the incident indicated the presence of negligence by the store’s owner. According to the lawsuit, the owner was aware of the danger and failed to take the necessary steps to provide customers with a safe environment. Reports indicate that the man’s family was recently awarded a substantial monetary settlement nearly four years after the fatal incident.

Sudden loss

Families who experience untimely loss due to the presence of negligent security might not always be fully aware of the next steps to take to seek restitution. Following such a loss, a person in Georgia could benefit from consulting with an attorney for guidance on all his or her available legal avenues and advice on the best course of action with which to proceed. While there might be nothing one can do to change what took place, seeking accountability in civil court could help provide some level of comfort and it may even help prevent others from experiencing similar scenarios in the future.
