Horrific Trucking Accident that Critically Injured Robert Lassiter Was Preventable

The trucking company, not just the driver, could be held liable for the crash

When you look at the mangled wreckage of Robert Lassiter’s vehicle, it is a wonder that anyone survived the January 2nd collision. Robert’s father, Kevin, told reporters from Fox 5 Atlanta, “The car was on top of another car, you couldn’t even tell the make and model of his car.”

The collision, which reportedly involved 10 vehicles, was caused when an 18-wheeler operated by BSM Logistics and driven by Andriel Meadows veered off Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross, Georgia, jumping an embankment and smashing vehicles in a parking lot.

Lassister had to be pried out of his crushed vehicle using the jaws of life, and he is currently in the hospital being treated for multiple traumatic injuries. It’s reported that Meadows wasn’t supposed to be behind the wheel of a commercial vehicle the morning of the crash. His log indicated he was off duty. While Meadows faces charges related to the crash, the trucking company that hired him could also bear significant liability for this disaster.

Atlanta attorney Bradley Pratt once defended giant trucking companies against lawsuits filed for similar collisions, and now he represents people injured in such crashes. He says virtually all trucking accidents are preventable, and usually there are corporate behaviors that contribute to the conditions that resulted in such disasters.

“In my experience, drivers don’t manipulate their logs just for fun,” Bradley says. “It’s usually an indication that they are experiencing unfair pressure from their employer to drive more than the law allows. When that happens, the company can be held liable for collisions that result.”

Moreover, Meadows had a criminal history which included drug court, which should have been a red flag for the trucking company when they hired him. A simple background check would have raised this issue, and if the company failed to run such a background check, or hired him despite his criminal background without any mitigating steps, then they could become even more liable for the damages suffered by the victims of this collision.

But justice in a case like this is about more than just recovering funds to ensure the victims of the crash can have the best medical treatment available. Justice is also about holding the trucking company accountable so they cannot afford to continue the negligent practices that led to the collision. It’s about forcing the company to make changes to ensure a similar disaster doesn’t happen to somebody else.
